New notebook

Got a HP dm1z! (or just pavilion dm1)

Now, personal grudge against HP still holds, but for this little and worthy fella, it's an exception.

It just ticks all the boxes especially if you're a student, looking for a value laptop on the go.

Forgive me for this, but this is going to sound like an advertisement, which isn't intended!

As a computer science student, I needed a portable machine with a screen larger than 10'', lightweight, good battery life, relatively affordable, and not a mac(too expensive, compatibility issues for some programs).
Specific criteria I went by:
- >= 11.6'' screen w/ 13xx*7xx min res
- under 400/500 bucks
- wireless net
- ~1.5kg
- snappy processor
- stirdly built

After weeks and weeks of research and contemplation, it boiled down to the Lenovo thinkpad 120e, and the HP dm1z.

Online reviews for both had me hanging for a few weeks, but after finding a coupon for dm1z, it was clear.
So far it's doing great - the AMD fusion is behaving well, display is sharp, lag hasn't appeared yet.

My expectations for this machine is just to be able to compile and run code without problems, and work remotely off the uni machines, and have a large enough screen to scroll through many many lines of code. (i.e. not a 10 incher)
No gaming, no fancy HD video watching, no surround sound, nothing that requires horsepower.

The keyboard on it is nice, very much resembles the mac keyboards. It doesn't feel plastic or flimsy.
Some complain about the trackpad; I can tell you it's better than the one on my 16'' Asus K61IC(which is overly sensitive). The left/right click buttons are indeed joined to the tracking area, but it's very obvious - by touch - when you've reached the buttons.
Its glossy screen and the thinkpad's matte were hard to pick from. I would've definitely gone for matte, but the dm1z won me over with the price + promising fusion processor.

So it's perfect for students who are looking for decent battery life, a sufficient screen size, low cost/good dollar for power, and don't need beastly performance.
All under 400 bucks directly from HP (USA/USD), even cheaper with a coupon.
Including the shipping cost to Australia, it still costs much less(> 100 bucks) than what you'd have to pay from retail stores.

On a side note, I; did my research, know a bit about hardware, and have a keen eye for perfection + precision in graphics. Still, no complains from me for this machine yet.. EXCEPT! the slightly badly located ethernet slot - it's like those flaps on mobile phones that you have to pop out, and is attached by a short piece of plastic/rubber. But considering the machine will use wifi 90% of the time, it's not really much.
Maybe there will be an update after a week/month.

You know what would be bloody awesome?

If medic gets the ability to resurrect.

Assuming the medic update comes with Meet the Medic.

Arrived home, dumped my jacket, then threw myself at the computer.
I see someone's buried my monthly account statement from the bank, under some post-it note stacks and random receipts from Big W and Woolorths. From within the envelope, reveals a statement unusually long from the usual ones. Out of nowhere, comes this spark of odd thought which I soon committed myself to. It was to cross-check and confirm every transaction made within the time period stated on the paper. There was no particular reason, no motivation required, nor did anyone lecture me to do it. Maybe it was just.. autonomous. Maybe something from deep within suddenly decided to do something productive. Maybe it was the transactions on the record showing "PAYPAL AUSTRALIA" on every single one of them, except for one, to Valve. OR MAYBE... My brain could no longer stand being unused since the summer holidays started, and wanted to at least do something that required even a minor watt of brainpower. And so, I checked all the transactions off, learned something - that PayPal's logged date is a day behind the logged dates on my bank statement - which is surprisingly more useful than you'd expect. After that, followed half an hour of the new(well, to me) episode of the Big Bang theory on the telly. During which I had my Singaporean noodle takeaway. It's really good, except now my hands smell like them. I'm off to wash them now.

Just cleaning the keyboard.

That guy.

The other day, on the express to Strathfield train, I overheard two dudes talking about someone.

".. He's really nice; he's always kind, he always has time for you, he's always smiling.. "

It seemed like one of them were describing a friend of his, to another, for purposes of introduction. I personally thought he was describing the way this guy is at work.

There appeared an instant spark of respect for that guy, as soon as I overheard it.
It makes quite an inspiration to strive towards a better person.
Think about it; if you found out that you've been backchatted about, wouldn't it be awesome to discover that they've said something similar to that guy on the train, but about you?
Wouldn't it make you feel good for leaving a nice impression on people? Surely it would. :O

Everyone knows it's difficult to find truly good friends; ones you can trust, ones you know who won't attempt to nuke social circles, and especially ones that you can pretty much get along like family(or better!).

Perhaps individuals can be depicted as a chunk of clay at their own control. Depending on how they decide to shape themselves; smooth, round, rigid, geometric, spiky.. and where they decide to go with it; do they toss it around everywhere? do they kick it around the ground, or do they roll it around in sand? do they hold it carefully in their hands?
As they continue to mould, it will accrete with dirt, rocks, stones, dust.. they'll eventually sink into the clay. Any injuries to the surface would gradually be moulded away.
Obviously the result would be of how they took care of it.

I think I'll take good care of my chunk, and mould it into something friendly. Something which others won't frown at; something, when the others hold it, that would leave a kind impression on their hands.

tl;dr: It's nice to be complimented. I'm going to try and be less of a pain in the back.
